Demi Moore makes heartbreaking admission during speech after winning first acting award in 45 year career

She picked up a win for her leading role in The Substance

Demi Moore made a tough admission in her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes as she picked up the Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical trophy for her role in The Substance.

She opened by telling the crowd she ‘really wasn’t expecting that’ and that she’d ‘been doing this a long time’, noting that in more than 45 years of acting it was her first award.

While she has won some awards previously in her career, her previous win from a major awards association came as part of an ensemble accolade from the Independent Spirit Awards for Margin Call.

This is her first solo award from a major association, and her first Golden Globe after four nominations, with her last nominations before The Substance coming in 1997.

During her acceptance speech Moore told the crowd that she’d once been told she was a ‘popcorn actress’ and took that to mean winning Golden Globes wasn’t going to happen in her career.

“30 years ago I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn actress’, and at that time I made that mean this was something I wasn’t allowed to have,” Moore said as she clutched her Golden Globe.

“I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but I couldn’t be acknowledged and I bought in and I believed that. That corroded me over time to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete, maybe I’d done what I was supposed to do.

“As I was at kind of a low point I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance, and the universe told me that you’re not done.”

She then paid tribute to the movie’s director Coralie Fargeat, and for her co-star Margaret Qualley and ‘all of the people who stood by me’ and ‘believed in me when I haven’t believed in myself’.

She said: “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or successful enough or basically just not enough…

“I had a woman say to me ‘just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick’.”

Moore celebrated her award as ‘a marker’ in her career which she loved ‘and being reminded that I do belong’, with the audience starting to cheer for her as she wrapped things up.

According to the BBC, Moore may have to make more acceptance speeches soon as her Golden Globes win could put her in good stead for the Oscars.

Everyone is saying the same thing about Nikki Glaser’s Golden Globes speech as she slams Joker 2

Her monologue has received praise

Nikki Glaser’s Golden Globes speech for this year’s awards has gotten everyone talking, in part due to her pointed dig at Joker 2.

The speech had particular focus on it, due to the car crash performance from host Jo Koy at last year’s awards.

Koy was booed on stage for some of his jokes, with some of what he said even eliciting loud groans from the audience.

This included one particular joke about Barbie, which led to accusations of sexism.

Glaser took on the role this year as the first ever solo woman to host the awards show.

Thankfully, this was no repeat of last year, as Glaser has already received widespread praise for her accomplished opening speech.

The comedian poked fun at Ariana Grande’s viral ‘holding space’ moment, asking if she could hold her finger as she was nervous.

Despite this though, Glaser showed no signs of nerves.

One viewer tweeted: “Nikki Glaser devoured and left no crumbs with that opening monologue.”

Another said: “nikki glaser kind of absolutely annihilating her monologue. incredible presence, perfect pacing, knows how to roast people and be tongue-in-cheek without being obnoxious and offensive.

“i fear the golden globes are officially back.:

A third viewer tweeted: “nikki glaser reminding us why we should never have a male awards show host ever again.”

Within her speech though, Glaser’s most cutting joke ironically came at the expense of the Joker sequel.

She said: “Where’s the Joker 2 table? Oh right, they’re not here”.

Joker: Folie a Deux was a commercial and critical flop, despite the success of the first.

Where Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar, and Joker was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, Joker Folie a Deux has received no awards buzz, made a massive financial loss, and sparked mass fan walkouts.

If one fun thing came out of it however, at the very least, it was Glaser’s joke.

It received a great deal of focus online, with one viewer tweeting: “Joker 2 joke was the best the show has had since Amy [Poehler] and Tina [Fey].”

One fan, however, called it ‘a bit disrespectful’, with another adding: “We didn’t laugh.”

Another fan meanwhile tweeted: “Nikki Glaser actually went easy on the film like she said she would ‘cause I’ve heard people say much harsher things about it.”

This is not far off, with one actor Tim Dillon who had a small role in the film’s sequel dubbing the sequel ‘the worst film ever made’.

Dillon said: “We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f**k is this?’

Brenda Fricker starred as the homeless woman living in Central Park with her pigeons in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

The woman who famously starred as the ‘pigeon lady’ in Home Alone 2 has made a heartbreaking admission about her acting career.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 32 years since Kevin McCallister’s parents lost their child for the second time in quick succession.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York sees Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) accidentally board a plane to New York City while his family head to Florida for Christmas.

After checking in to Donald Trump’s The Plaza hotel with his dad’s credit card, the 10-year-old must yet again deal with the Wet Bandits, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) who have escaped from prison.

Along the way Kevin comes across a kind-hearted pigeon enthusiast (played by Brenda Fricker and not Piers Morgan), who helps him to defeat the criminals once and for all.

Fricker reached the pinnacle of Hollywood in 1990 after becoming the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, starring alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in biopic My Left Foot.

After featuring in Home Alone 2 in 1992, she went on to star in So I Married an Axe Murderer, Angels in the Outfield and A Time to Kill.

However the now 79-year-old has suggested in a recent interview with The Times that her career has taken an unfortunate turn since turning 70.

“They don’t write for old women,” she said. “Shakespeare wrote for old women, but none of the young writers do. None.

“There are so many wonderful people around … interesting women with history and stories. Remember these words when you turn 70: you become invisible.

“Richard Harris said that to me while sitting on the rocks looking out over the Atlantic Ocean and it stuck in my head. On my 70th birthday I thought, ‘He’s wrong, I feel great.’

“A week later I knew exactly what he meant. It’s weird. You have to shout to be heard. So it’s not that I’m out of work for any other reason — there are no parts to do.”

That being said, Fricker joked that she is happy to not be involved in the new ‘sober’ Hollywood.

On how the industry has changed, the actor said: “I was thinking back to the days when we were all pissed in the BBC bar, but the work was ten times more creative because we were all losing our inhibitions and picking up the courage to say things.

“That’s all gone. It’s all sober people, just sitting around tables.

“I sound like an alcoholic, I’m not. There’s just a looseness about it.

“Do you know what wasn’t around as much, actually? Ambition. I never heard anyone using that word.

“There was no greed about work, or competitiveness. There was just joy and fun.”

Christopher Nolan reflects on accepting award for Heath Ledger in moving speech at Golden Globes

He won the best director award for Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan spoke about his ‘dear friend’ Heath Ledger in an emotional speech after he won the best director role at the Golden Globes.

Nolan, 53, scooped the Golden Globe for Best Film Director for Oppenheimer – one of five wins for the movie.

Oppenheimer also won the awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr and Best Original Score – Motion Picture for Ludwig Göransson.

Collecting his award, Murphy paid tribute to Nolan and their 20-year-long collaboration that has seen them work on six movies together so far.

He said: “I knew the first time I walked on a Chris Nolan set it was different.

“I could tell by the level of vigour, focus, the level of dedication and the complete lack of seating options for actors.”

And when it was Nolan’s turn to step on stage to collect his award, he recalled the moment he accepted an award for the late Ledger, who died in 2008 aged just 28.

Ledger tragically passed away before the release of Nolan’s The Dark Knight in which he played the Joker.

Ledger’s performance in the Batman movie was met with critical acclaim, and he posthumously won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Nolan said: “The only time I have only ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger and that was complicated and challenging for me.

“In the middle of speaking Robert Downey Jr caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support, the same look he is giving me now, the same love and support he’s shown so many people in our community over so many years.

Nolan gave an emotional speech.

“I thought it would be simpler accepting for myself but as a director of course I accept on behalf of (everyone), as directors we bring people together, we try and get them to bring their best.”

Downey Jr won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.

Appearing on stage, he joked: “I took a beta blocker so this is going to be a breeze.”

The 58-year-old then thanked the cast and crew which helped them ‘render a God damn masterpiece’ in Oppenheimer.

PEOPLE CALL FOR RICKY GERVAIS TO RETURN AS GOLDEN GLOBE HOST

But while we wait to see who this year’s winners are, why don’t we take a trip down memory lane and reflect on some of the viral moments from years gone by.

The biggest moments from the 2024 Golden Globes

Cillian Murphy’s lipstick smear

Cillian Murphy scooped the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture drama award for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, signalling a tidal wave of wins for the film.

The actor gave a touching speech, but fans were too preoccupied with the lipstick smear on his nose to pay attention.

The smear had ended up on his nose after wife Yvonne McGuinness gave him an excited congratulatory kiss – which is absolutely adorable.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s impromptu reunion

Ben Affleck surprised his long-term pal Matt Damon during last year’s ceremony, with Affleck spotting his buddy and sneaking over to surprise him – much to Damon’s delight.

The buddies would later present the the Best Director award together. Cute!

Jennifer Lawrence’s exit plan

Jennifer Lawrence had received a best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture nomination for her part in No Hard Feelings – eventually losing out to Emma Stone in Poor Things.

Before Stone’s win Lawrence could be seen mouthing to the camera that she would be heading home should she not get an award, mouthing to camera: “If I don’t win, I’m leaving.”

Lawrence was of course joking and could be seen applauding Stone for her win moments later.

No hard feelings, eh?

Taylor Swift’s death stare

Last year’s host Jo Koy risked the wrath of the Swifties by joking: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”

Swift appeared unimpressed by the joke, with cameras capturing a very stoic reaction from the singer.

Koy would later respond by saying he ‘didn’t understand’ the backlash to his quip, saying: “There’s no ill intent in that joke. The joke is about the NFL and how they keep using cutaways to [her].”

Other viral Golden Globe moments

Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy’s House of the Dragon acceptance

House of the Dragon picked up an award for Best Television Series in 2023, which appeared to be a surprise to the cast, with Rhaenyra Targaryen actors Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy joining director Miguel Sapochnik to collect the award.

“As you can tell, we didn’t think we were going to win so I didn’t get ready,” Sapochnik told the crowd.

This especially appeared to be the case for Alcock who giggled her way through the speech – leading many viewers to wonder if she’d gotten a little tipsy.

The Ricky Gervais years

Gervais has hosted several Golden Globes ceremonies over the past few years, with his most recent appearance coming in 2020,

The comedian made a number of brutal digs at Hollywood’s stars during his time in-front of the mic, including scathing comments about Johnny Depp’s film The Tourist in 2011 as well as jabs directed at James Corden, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mel Gibson and many others.
